Understanding The Various
Hardwood Flooring Grades

The grade of a wood floor is not indicative of the wood's "quality" (although higher-grade wood often comes with a higher price) nor does it relate to the flooring's durability.

Clear Grade

This type of wood is known within the NHLA as FAS (Firsts and Seconds). It represents a premium-grade wood, and, as the category name implies, its surface is nearly devoid of character marks such as knots and burls. Clear Grade boards typically exhibit a remarkably consistent grain pattern, and the color remains uniform from one board to the next.

Select Grade

Similar to Clear Grade wood, Select Grade wood displays a uniform surface with minimal "imperfections." However, in the case of Select Grade wood, which comprises both heartwood and sapwood, you'll observe greater color variations both between and within the boards. Additionally, subtle deviations in the grain pattern begin to reveal some of the wood's inherent character.

#1 Common Grade

It's in the Common Grades that the true natural character of wood comes to life. In #1 Common, you'll notice features like swirls, knots, and streaks on a significant portion of the boards, though these features are generally limited in size and prominence. When you observe a #1 Common Grade floor, it serves as a clear reminder that you're witnessing a natural, organic material in all its authentic beauty.

#2 Common Grade

#2 Common shares similarities with #1 Common, albeit featuring a higher proportion of boards showcasing the distinctive marks of natural wood and a greater diversity of colors among the boards. Sometimes referred to as Rustic Grade, #2 Common preserves much of the inherent, organic character of the trees from which it originates.

Character Grade

Character grade hardwoods boast a genuine aesthetic that showcases the complete spectrum of the hardwood floor's inherent features. They embrace all the natural color variations found within the species. The presence of small surface knots, cracks, wormholes, and mineral streaks, which naturally occur in the forest, enhances the presentation of the wood's innate beauty.

Cabin Grade

Also referred to as Tavern grade, this grade is essentially what remains after other wood pieces have been sorted into the previously described categories. Cabin grade wood planks are usually shorter and may exhibit more imperfections, including milling-related damage marks. Anticipate a higher level of material waste (consider ordering approximately 20% more than your requirement) and the need to carefully inspect and sort through all the planks before installation.

Finish Options
Water-Based Floor Finishes
Overview

Waterborne wood flooring finish, also referred to as a water-based wood flooring finish, represents a specific category of floor finishes. These finishes employ waterborne sealers to prepare the floor for the application of topcoats, which are available in two distinct versions: single-component and two-component formulations. Notably, the two-component varieties include a separate Harner catalyst. Water-based finishes are renowned for their durability and appeal to those seeking reduced VOC emissions, along with an impressive range of low-sheen options. For those in search of a modern and contemporary flooring solution, water-based finishes present an excellent choice.

Deciding Factors
Quicker Dry-Time (2-3 Hours)
Quicker Cure-Time (72 Hours Until You Can Use Your New Floors)
Lower Sheen Rate than oil-based finishes (Less light reflection) - Dirt, Dents & Scratches are much less visibile.
Naturally Inflammable - less hazardous compared to oil-based floor finishes
Environmentally Friendly with less VOC's “Volatile Organic Compounds”
Non-Yellowing - your floors appearance will remain the same throughout its lifespan. Oil-Based finishes can often leave a yellow or amber look to them.
Great Choice for modern or contemorary flooring styles
Oil-Based Floor Finishes
Overview

Oil-based finishes provide a distinctive amber richness that sets them apart from other types of finishes. These finishes contain oil components that penetrate the wood more deeply, becoming absorbed into the fibers. The amber hues in the oil enhance the wood's grain, resulting in an immediate intensification of its natural color. Prior to the rise in popularity of water-based finishes, these oil-based products were the primary choice for finishing floors, and some homeowners continue to favor the timeless appeal of amber-tinted floors that gradually darken over time with exposure to sunlight.

Deciding Factors
Appearance - Oil-based finishes offer a unique amber richness that can not be found in other finishes.
Oil finishes take longer to dry. Oil-based finishes take 12 hours or longer between coats and a full day after the final coat before you can walk on the floor. Rugs are not recommended to be placed on the floors for 14-21 days (about 3 weeks) after the final coat.
Oil-based finishes typically have a very strong odor Upon Application
Environmental Impact - Oil finishes  have higher levels of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which emit gases that can be harmful to health and the environment Upon Application.
Cost - Oil-based finishes are usually priced at approximately half the cost of water-based polyurethane. This price difference can be a significant factor to consider when budgeting for refinishing your floors or installing new flooring with on-site finishing.
